Remembering to forget

With the cost of data storage being so cheap the Internet has the potential to remember everything that is ever posted online, for ever! Whilst historians might relish the idea of a future where the personal details of everyone are searchable centuries back most people like the idea of being able to be forgotten. The European Union is leading the way with legislation that provides a "right to be forgotten" — strictly speaking, a right to have certain kinds of information removed from search engine results. However, in a Kafkaesque twist, my colleague Mark Wilson brought to my attention, the fact that Google in the EU has been ordered to remove links to stories about Google removing links to stories. You can read more about this in this arstechnica story.

A Foot Controlled Mouse Offers Benefits

By Kelly Wood

A foot controlled mouse works just like a hand operated one, except that users operate it with the feet. There are numerous advantages attached to using such a device. Not only does it prevent repetitive strain injuries, but it can even improve efficiency for some users. There are different models available for purchase today and reading reviews online can help you make a decision as to which one is most suitable for your purposes.

Most of the designs are made up of two parts. There is a segment usually referred to as a slipper that moves a pointer to control the cursor just like a hand device. Another segment called a pedal allows for clicking and use of short cuts. Using the left and right feet together enables the user to accomplish all the necessary activities.

Many people today suffer from repetitive strain injury, particularly those whose professions involve long hours at the computer like editors and graphic designers. For them such a device provides a means of preventing this type of injury. For those who already have problems with their fingers, like carpel tunnel syndrome or shoulder and neck injuries, using their feet offers a workable solution. People with disabilities involving limited or no use of their hands may also be able to use this type of device.

Short cuts are frequently used in editing and designing. When all you have is two hands, your speed is limited to your two hands. Feet are left unused and it makes sense that using them can help a great deal when multitasking is required. A mouse that allows short cuts to be defined can be of great benefit in such a situation. Gamers too, appreciate having their hands free for battle.

Clicking is an easy activity to manage in this way as it does not require much precision. Cursor control, on the other hand, requires some precision and is not as easy a skill to accomplish. However, it is not that difficult and just as driving a car requires learning how to use the pedals, this skill can also be mastered with practice.

Using such a device does not affect any of the other input devices used. This means that you can choose to use devices simultaneously. You have to find out which combination works best for you, offering you the most efficiency while saving you from excessive strain at the same time. For example, computer gamers like the fact that they can click and have their hands free at the same time.

Having a comfortable chair adjusted to the correct height is important. Feet must be able to reach the pedals comfortably to control them. One is less likely to develop ankle strain than wrist strain but it is still important to take breaks. It is also important that you choose a device with a slipper that is comfortable and moves easily.

People may question whether use of the feet is as efficient as using their hands. In fact, they can be just as efficient and in fact efficiency is actually increased in certain cases. Just make sure that you purchase a foot controlled mouse that is simple and effective to use, offering all the options you need.
