Microsoft announces release of universal translator

The Guardian reports that Microsoft is to release a near real time voice translator as Skype Translator by the end of this year. The service will first appear on Windows 8 but is expected to be rolled out to other platforms quickly. In a demo at the Code conference Skype Translator translated English to German and vice versa nearly perfectly. The video below explains how this works.

Autodesk Announces New Cloud Service – Autodesk BIM 360

Autodesk announced and released a new Cloud Based service today called Autodesk BIM 360. Autodesk BIM 360 includes a set of services that provide cloud based access to BIM project information throughout the project’s lifecycle. Autodesk BIM 360 will work with several of Autodesk’s BIM solutions including Autodesk Building Design Suite and Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite.

"Cloud-connected workflows are giving our customers worldwide a better way to work with colleagues across their organizations and with business partners, clients and stakeholders,” said Amar Hanspal, Autodesk senior vice president, information modeling products.

Autodesk BIM 360 is an expansion of Autodesk 360 and works with Autodesk PLM 360.  Autodesk BIM 360 is available now in English (support for other languages is coming.)  Some of its services may only be available to Autodesk Building Design Suite 2013 subscription customers.  Visit www.autodesk.com/bim360 for more details and contact your local reseller.

So what is Autodesk BIM 360?  It is an online (cloud based) collaboration tool from Autodesk that attempts to allow team members to share model information.  Its goal is to allow Autodesk Building Design Suite and Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite customers to work together.

Autodesk wants to bring the BIM process to the cloud, along with many other of their services. This is their next step in that process. Autodesk’s recent acquisition of Vela Systems goes well with Autodesk BIM 360 and will be able to work within that system. The potential to bring project design data to many users, companies, engineers, designers, contractors, construction workers, and municipalities is there.

I plan on getting more information soon and will expand upon the subject as more information becomes available.

Leadtek Announces the WinFast PX9600 GSO Extreme video card

Leadtek just announced the launch of the WinFast PX9600 GSO Extreme video card. Based on the high quality NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO core chip, PX9600 GSO is equipped with 384MB of memory and 96 Stream Processing Units. The Leadtek exclusive S-FANPIPE fansink design is also applied to PX9600 GSO. This innovative cooling system can effectively conduct GPU heat through an S-shape copper heat pipe to the fan for a dramatic cool down effect that creates a stable temperature for the graphic card to deliver a superior visual performance.

Leadtek WinFast PX9600 GSO Extreme has adopted 65nm technology and is powered by NVIDIAs GeForce 9600 GSO graphics processing unit. With 384GMB of GDDR3 on a 192-bit memory bus design, the GPU and memory clock can run at the amazing speed of 600MHz and 1800MHz respectively. Furthermore, PX9600 GSO Extreme has 96 Stream Processing Units, which combine with the new PCI Express 2.0 bus architecture to create the fastest 3D graphic processing speed. To offer users an even better and more convenient experience using a graphic card, PX9600 GSO Extreme not only supports Microsoft Windows Vista and Direct X 10 with full Shader Model 4.0, but also fully supportsthe existing PCI Express 1.0 motherboards.

Western Digital Announces 2.5-inch WD VelociRaptor Hard Drive for Enterprise Users

Western Digital announced today the WD VelociRaptor 10,000 RPM enterprise SATA hard drives in an enterprise-class 2.5-inch form factor for blade servers and 1U and 2U rack servers. The newest WD VelociRaptor hard drive is built for business-critical applications with enterprise-class mechanics and packs up to 300 GB of capacity into the enterprise small form factor bays, while consuming 35 percent less power than the previous-generation WD Raptor drive. I reviewed the VelociRaptor back in April and found it to be a great drive, so be sure to check out if you havent already.

“WD is bringing to enterprise customers what PC enthusiasts already appreciate about the WD VelociRaptor: a combination of high performance and high capacity for hard drive storage,” said John Rydning, IDCs research director for hard disk drives. “WDs new WD VelociRaptor, designed specifically for the enterprise in an energy efficient 2.5-inch form factor, gives system OEMs and end users a new storage option to consider to meet growing storage requirements.”
